Client Retention Rate Calculator
Your retention rate is the share of clients you kept over a period, not counting the new ones. Enter three numbers to see your retention rate, your churn rate and how long a client stays on average.
- Churn rate15.0%
- Average client lifetime6.7 months
For one month. For a quarter or a year, use the counts for that period.
How to calculate client retention rate
Take the clients you have at the end of the period, subtract the new clients you added during it, and divide by the clients you had at the start. Churn rate is 100% minus the retention rate. One divided by the monthly churn rate gives the average client lifetime in months.
Example
- You start the month with 200 clients.
- You add 40 new clients and end the month with 210.
- Retention = (210 − 40) ÷ 200 = 85%.
- Churn = 15% a month, so a client stays about 6.7 months.
Questions
What is a good client retention rate for a coaching program?+
It depends on how clients pay. In a monthly offer, losing under 5% of clients a month is strong. In an upfront program, the number that matters is how many renew or buy the next offer when the program ends.
What is the difference between retention rate and churn rate?+
They are two sides of one number. Retention is the share of clients you kept; churn is the share you lost. 85% retention means 15% churn.
How do I improve client retention?+
Most clients leave because they do not reach the result. Clear stages with a time for each, check-ins when a client falls behind, and a next offer for clients who win keep them longer.
