Acquisition Ace's Trustpilot went from almost nothing to 4.8, with 50+ testimonials. Reviews there are asked for the day a milestone is logged.

A referral comes from the same moment. A client who has just been asked about a win is the client most likely to send a friend. A monthly broadcast to the whole community reaches the clients who are behind as well.

When should you ask a coaching client for a referral?

On the day a milestone is logged. The client has just seen the number. A week later they are busy with the next level.

Ask after the proof request, in the same thread, once the client has answered it. The proof request names the milestone and asks one question with one link. The referral ask follows it, one line long.

Before we build the proof system, a program collects almost none. After, three to five a month, up to ten, depending on the size of the offer. The better measure is the share of winners who give proof: every third, ideally every second. Some offers reach about 70%. I do not claim more than that.

Referrals ride on that same moment, so the same measure works for them: the share of winners who refer someone.

What do you say when you ask?

One question, in the client's own channel, from the person they already talk to. Who else should be in this program? It is short, it is about the program, and it asks for a name.

Then make the next step easy. Ask whether they will introduce the person, or send them your booking link. Make it easy, like you would for a five-year-old.

What happens after a client gives a name?

It goes on the board the same day, on the referring client's row. A name in a DM gets lost. A name on the board has an owner. The full sequence has six steps.

  1. The milestone is logged on the client board.
  2. The proof request goes out: the milestone, one question, one link.
  3. The referral ask follows in the same thread: who else should be in this program?
  4. The name is logged on the client's row, with who sent it and why.
  5. Sales gets the name with the context.
  6. The referring client hears back: thanks, and what happened next.

The context matters most. Sales should know who referred the person, which result they saw, and what the client said about them. The closer then opens on something true, and the new client arrives with the right expectation.

The referred person still goes through the normal sales call, recorded, with the same no-refund framing. A referral is a warm lead. The closer still promises only what the program delivers.

Result from a named client with written permission. Typical clients of this cohort saw a range of outcomes; nothing here is a guarantee. How we handle claims.

Who should you not ask for a referral?

Clients who are overdue, unhappy or behind. You cannot upsell someone who is lost in your program, and you cannot ask them to recommend it either. They get the check-in, the help and the next milestone first.

Skip clients in the middle of a refund request too. An ask in that week tells the client nobody read their message.

How do you measure referrals?

Count referrals per winner, next to proof per winner. Both come from the same moment, so the board can show them side by side. If clients answer the proof request and the referral column stays empty, check that the question is in the message at all.

Should you pay clients for referrals?

That is a separate decision, and it changes the rules. A client who earns something for a referral has a material connection to you. If they then post about the program, that connection has to be disclosed. This is not legal advice.

Start with the ask and the log. Decide on rewards once the board shows how many winners refer, so you know what a reward would have to change.

Watch out. Never write a client's recommendation for them, and never tie a reward to saying something positive. The words and the numbers have to be the client's own.

This week. Add one column to the client board: referred by. Then add the referral question to your milestone proof message, after the link, and log every name it brings in.
