We once ran a $97 a month community as a downsell. It made a couple of thousand a month with almost no maintenance, and that was the point.
What is an alumni program in coaching?
An alumni program is the planned contact with clients after their program ends. It decides who gets asked for proof, who gets offered what, and when someone checks in again.
Alumni are not one group. Some reached the promised result, some got close, and some never really started. Each group needs something different, so an alumni program sorts them first.
What goes in an alumni program?
Four things. A community is optional, and it is the part most coaches build first.
- The client stays on the board after the end, with where they finished against the goal.
- Check-ins at set months after the end, asking where they are now.
- A proof request for winners: a testimonial, a success interview or a Trustpilot review.
- A next offer matched to what they need now.
Referrals come from the same group. People who really have results are not afraid to talk about you in a video. They are also the clients to ask for referrals.
What should an alumni program sell?
The next problem. A client who hit $10K a month does not want the same program again; they want $10K to $25K. That is an upsell. A client close to the goal who wants more time buys an extension.
If it is ongoing, it has to be a value loop: something the client needs every month in their business, like a service or a tool. Access to the same calls for less money does not count.
The word that matters is maintenance. Do not turn it into a serious community with live calls, because then it competes with your main offer. People ask why they would sign up for the big one if they get this in the cheap one. It kills the reason to upgrade from low to high, and it happens faster than you think.

How do you measure an alumni program?
Three numbers: the share of winners who give proof, the share of alumni who buy a next offer, and how long clients stay across offers. If the next offer is relevant, up to 30% of all clients buy it, and 40% or more of the winners.
Video Business Academy clients stayed two to three years on average, across the offers they bought. That came from a defined goal, tracking and next offers for winners.

What goes wrong with alumni programs?
No contact after the last call. Most coaches never speak to past clients again, and the warmest buyers go cold. The other mistake is one offer blasted to everyone. Alumni who never started need a different message from alumni who won.
Watch out. Do not fill the alumni community with live calls and new content. Within weeks, prospects ask why they should pay for the main program.
